Thank you elf Nancy for the share: " seems each year I'm blessed to work with Holiday Express, one particular show touches me to the core. This year it was the CVR party. I always try to work the back rows and the perimeter once the show gets started because it dawns on me that these folks may be the 'overlooked' ones. One gentleman caught my eye, sitting with a group of men, his face had no expression and he seemed completely into his own thoughts, totally removed from the dancing and music. I asked him if he wanted to dance and he did look at me, but his face remained expressionless and he made no response, then looked forward again.
Sometimes I pursue, but this did not seem appropriate in this gentleman's case, so I bid him a happy holiday and turned and began dancing with the enthusiastic crowd. A few minutes passed, music still playing and I felt a tap on my back. I turned and here was my intended dance partner, still silent and expressionless, but THERE (all 6'2" of him, he was quite tall), and ready to dance. We joined hands and danced to "HOME" (my new favorite song) and I practically bubbled over, telling him I was so happy he joined me. He danced the entire song and then, when it was over, sat back down, retreating into his original state, just looking ahead.
The population of this party is diverse, some individuals affected at birth with their life situation, and others are affected during their lives with a medical problem, a traumatic brain injury, a car accident, I'm sure there are many different causes. It hit me right between the eyes that I might have been one of these individuals attending the CVR party in this capacity because, when I was 47, I had a ruptured brain aneurysm. The dear Lord guided some fantastic neurosurgeons, spared my life and brought me back to my original state (so the doctors tell me), but it was a very big possibility that I might have died, or been altered and perhaps not have the cognitive ability that I was born with.
Even now when I think of the physical possibilities I experience a panic feeling, but no worries, the loving, capable, caring, talented and special, oh so special, group that makes up Holiday Express, quelled that panic. All I had to do was look around, take in what was happening all around and I was instantly put at ease. If I had been a client at CVR, I would be fine because the wonderful people who make up Holiday Express would have made sure of that.
God bless you all. Thank you for putting joy in my heart." www.holidayexpress.org
